Tietze Pool has closed for 2023!
See you next summer!
History of the Pool
Built in 1947, the pool with its Palo Pinto stone bath house and pavilion is a treasure and served the community well. Swim skills have always been a focus at Tietze as dictated by the many who have taken their children there to learn. That tradition continues today, and you’ll notice that Dallas Aquatics packs as many lessons in as possible there. Additionally, the Tietze Torpedoes Swim Team boasts a long and winning history with the pool.
For a period, the old pool’s future was uncertain due to maintenance requirements and inefficiencies because of its age – 71 years in 2018! But along came Park Department’s new Aquatics Master Plan which secured a future for this neighborhood gem. Directed efforts by our District 14 Park Board Member, Paul Sims, were a large part of this decision, and we cannot thank him enough. At 2016 community meetings to gather input for Tietze’s new aquatics center, it was clearly relayed by the many participants that swimming education should continue as a tradition and large focus of the pool’s culture. Sensitive to the blending of new and old, Paul Sims stated that “The historical integrity of the park must be respected and maintained. This is a legacy project that will hopefully last 40 to 50 years, and I don't think it's hyperbole to say that the facility will define the park for generations to come. We have to get it right.”
At the end of the 2018 Swim Season, construction began the monumental task of removing the old pool and replacing it with a design a bit more modern and a recreational flare reflecting more how pools are used today. Protection of the trees near the pool area was a priority for the project. The beautiful bath house and pavilion remained, but their interiors were finished out to efficiently house the electronic components and other necessary equipment, storage and restrooms. The new Tietze Aquatics Center opened for the 2019 Swim Season.
